Living quietly among rural communities and farms throughout South Carolina is the Marsh Tacky horse… a historical treasure whose importance is as obscure as the horse itself… Like the ocean washes away a line in the sand, the Marsh Tacky is galloping toward oblivion, if action to protect them is not bolstered by an understanding of this important horse. Once it crosses that line into extinction, it will be too late. This special horse will be gone, and an important part of our lowcountry’s history will remain a little understood memory. The Marsh Tacky has always had a line drawn in the sand… a challenge: to survive… to raise awareness about its importance… and to garner support for its preservation.

Sunday, February 22, 2009. Fifteen marsh tacky horses raced on the brown, wet sand of low tide at Mitchelville Beach as part of the island’s Gullah Celebration. It has been more than 40 years since the breed has galloped beside Port Royal Sound, the revival of a longtime Gullah and native islander tradition.” (Video by David Feld) Added Note: After the 2009 race, we no longer race Marsh Tackies around a pole. The race is now a straight race from start to finish.
