  • 2017 CMTA Annual Meeting – Saturday May 27, 2017

The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association’s Annual Meeting will be held Saturday May 27th at 11:30 am at Aiken Polo Club’s Whitney Field, 420 Mead Avenue, Aiken, SC. People only – no horses allowed at the venue. Stabling and paddocks are available close to Whitney Field at Sea Horse Aiken for $20 per horse / per day if you would like to ride in Hitchcock Woods after the meeting.

Please bring a bag lunch. CMTA will provide soft drinks and water.

For horse boarding, contact Katherine Thomas at 803-443-4940 to make arrangements for your horse. Sea Horse Aiken is located at 541 Two Notch Road at the corner of Grace Avenue and Two Notch Road (across the clay road from the Aiken Training Track and the Saddle Doctor).

The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association All Breeds Fun Show will be held on Saturday July 2nd at Red Bank Arena in Lexington, SC.  A variety of youth and adult classes will be offered.  Registration starts at 8 am and the first class begins at 9 am.

CMTA Annual Meeting and Trail Ride – Lakeview Plantation, Fairfax, SC

Location:  Lakeview Plantation, 757 Cedar Knoll Rd, Fairfax, SC
Membership Meeting: 10:00 AM – Followed by Lunch and Trail Ride

Join us for a weekend of fun with Marsh Tackies!  You are welcome to stay for the day or for the weekend (Fri – Sun).  Register for riding, camping, lodging, and corral stalls on the Lakeview website or by calling the numbers listed below.  To bring a horse, you must have proof of a current 12 month negative Coggins test. Lakeview features more than 60 miles of trails on 2,600 private acres!  Trail riding will be available all weekend.

Aiken Symphony Guild will present “Horses and Harmony,” a fundraiser for the newly formed Aiken Symphony Orchestra on April 30th. Jackie McFadden will give a presentation at Hilton Head Island’s Heritage Library on Sunday February 28th at 2:00 pm.  The Heritage Library conducts workshops and lectures on topics of interest to genealogists and historians interested in the history of the Low Country. All classes and lectures are open to the general public but space is limited and advance registration is required. Equus Film Festival – Camden, SC
February 19-20, 2016 (Friday and Saturday)
 
Equus Film Festival Winnie Winners Tour will be in Camden, February 19-20, 2016. The EQUUS Film Festival was held in New York City in November and is now going on tour and stopping in Camden.  The Li’l Herc’s Kids Fest, a free child-friendly event that includes films, literary corners and other activities, will be held on Saturday, February 20th.  David Grant and his Marsh Tacky stallion, DP, will be featured at the event.

2014 Beach Race (Canceled)

The Carolina Marsh Tacky Association has reached the difficult decision to cancel the March 29, 2014 beach race on Daufuskie Island.  A number of our race team is unable to attend this year due to health concerns and demanding schedules.  We appreciate the generosity of the Daufuskie community, especially Wick Scurry of J & W Corporation; Bryan McCarthy and Kevin McCarthy of Bloody Point Golf Club and Resort; Robin Townsend and Tracy Von Harten of Daufuskie Island Tourism, Pete Lang of Beachfield; and author, Roger Pinckney. 

November 30, 2013 — Trail Ride at Lakeview Plantation

After Thanksgiving Trail Ride at Lakeview Plantation on Saturday November  30.  All breeds of horse are welcome!  You can stay for the day or for the weekend.  The fee for camping and riding with a corral panel stall is $24.00 per day.  A stay with a room in the lodge, is $36.00 per horse and rider per day (bring your own linens).  Lakeview will provide the meat for a covered dish supper each evening (Thursday, Friday & Saturday).  Please bring one hot covered dish for each trailer, large enough to feed the group staying in that trailer.  If you would like to participate in the trail ride, contact Jenifer Ravenel at crablady61@frontier.com or 843-906-2274.

April 27, 2013 – Daufuskie Island, SC  5th Annual Marsh Tacky Beach Race 

For official Daufuskie Beach Race Information: http://marshtackybeachracedaufuskie.com/  The annual beach race will be held on Daufuskie Island from 2:00 – 4:00pm April 27, 2013. The race is sponsored by a broad Daufuskie community coalition, J&W Corp, Plantation Land LLC and Sea Grass Stables at Melrose on the Beach. “Because of the logistics involved on an island with no bridge, this might be a smaller event than last year’s on Hilton Head,” says association secretary Jackie McFadden, “But as many of the breed’s foundation genetics come from Daufuskie, we feel it is very important to bring these horses ‘home’ to Daufuskie Island and run them in this historic setting.”

Horses will depart in large trailers by barge from Hilton Head at 8:30am Friday morning and return from Daufuskie at 10:00am Sunday morning. Wick Scurry of J&W Corporation will provide the barge. Boarding for horses will be provided by Sea Grass Stables at Melrose on the Beach.  We hope that you will join us for this historic event!

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host the “Marsh Tacky: Now and Then” exhibition, from September 13th through October 31st. The exhibit will trace the history of the Marsh Tacky and showcase local Marsh Tacky artwork.  On October 27th, CDM will celebrate their 5th Anniversary.  Marsh Tacky owners and their horses will attend the festival.  Come meet the Marsh Tackies!

Instructor: JACKIE MCFADDEN is the secretary of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association and is an Associate Professor and Reference Librarian at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She and colleague Patricia Stafford are researching the Marsh Tacky for a manuscript tracing the history and significance of the Marsh Tacky horse in South Carolina.

November 19, 2011 – Camden, SC — Kershaw County Farmers Market – Farm Day

Janson Cox and his Marsh Tacky, Molly, along with their 2 Norwegian Fjords, will be at the Camden Farmer’s Market on Saturday, November 19, from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM.  Farm Day will feature farm animals and equipment, horse and carriage rides, farm and homesteading demonstrations.

October 29, 2011 — Florence, SC — Southern States Fall Festival

September 17, 2011 – Ladson Fair Grounds — Post and Courier’s Paws and Claws Pet Expo

The Third Annual Post and Courier’s Lowcountry Paws and Claws Pet Expo will be held on Saturday Sept. 17 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Exchange Park Fairgrounds in Ladson, SC (9850 Highway 78). We will be giving riding demonstrations throughout the day and will have CMTA merchandise available for purchase. The expo will include educational demonstrations and presentations, adoptable pets from local rescues, and numerous local businesses.  Tickets are $2, ages 12 & under free. Pets are welcome.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit all participating animal rescue organizations. 

September 10, 2011  – Aiken, SC — The American Competitive Trail Horse Association  World Record Ride for the Mustangs 

Several Marsh Tackies will be competing in The American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA)2011 Guinness™ World Record Ride in support of the Mustang Heritage Foundation whose mission is to increase the number of adoptions of American Mustangs. Net proceeds from each rider entry fee will go directly to the Mustang Heritage Foundation.   Registration for this ride closes at 5:00 PM CST on 09/08/2011.

May 21, 2011- Patrick, SC — 1st Annual SC Marsh Tacky Trail Ride & Jamboree! H. Cooper Black Recreation Center

Trail ride sponsored by Team Marsh Tacky from Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors.  Admission is $25 with proceeds going to Carolina Marsh Tacky Association and the S.C. High School Rodeo Association. Trail ride from 10AM – 3Pm, Jamboree 4PM – 6PM. S.C. Heritage Horse Showcase will spotlight each horse and its background. March 27, 2011 Fort Mill, SC — Fort Mill Frontier Days – Anne Springs Close Greenway – Dairy Barn Entrance 1 -5 PM.

 Come out and see Janson Cox and Marsh Tacky Molly at the Greenway.  Activities include black powder demonstrations by the New Acquisitions Militia, candle making, “black powder cartridge” assembly and demonstrations by a woodworker and a blacksmith.  A Catawba potter will share the history and tradition of the pottery and will have select items for sale.  We will be selling Carolina Marsh Tacky Association T-shirts.  For more information, go to:http://www.ascgreenway.org.

Carolina Marsh Tacky horses – will add to the fun of Harvest Home Weekend Brookgreen’s annual fall festival, Harvest Home Weekend is two days of family friendly activities such as a scare-crow building contest, pumpkin painting and hay rides.

David Grant from Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors will display Marsh Tacky horses and talk about how and why they were recently named the State Heritage Horse of South Carolina. Team Marsh Tacky will saddle up and ride for festival-goers at various times during the day, displaying this breed’s calm and easy going nature, as well as the horse’s natural athleticism.

October 2, 2010 – Florence, SC — Fall Festival at Southern States

David Grant of Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors will have his Marsh Tacky horses on display from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 2 during the Fall Festival at Southern States located at 1600 W. Darlington St. in Florence. The Marsh Tacky, S.C.’s State Heritage Horse, will be among the many rare livestock breeds exhibited at this family friendly event.

September 25, 2010 – Johnsonville, SC — Rally at the River Swamp Fox Run

David Grant of Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors will have his horses at the “Rally at the River Swamp Fox Run” at Venters Landing on Highway 41. The rally will run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The event is part of ongoing efforts to help raise funds to bring a statue of Revolutionary War Gen. Francis Marion to the landing.  The statue, which will be ten-feet wide and will feature General Marion’s torso and the head of his Marsh Tacky horse, will be erected in early 2011 on a 12-foot marble base at the very site in Johnsonville where the General received his commission to lead the militia of patriots from the Johnsonville area.

September 11, 2010 –Moncks Corner, SC — State Heritage Horse to visit local DAR From Berkeley Independent

On Sept. 11 – Patriots Day – at 10 a.m. in Moncks Corner, a special horse will visit the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
General Marion’s Brigade Chapter will meet “Molly,” a Carolina Marsh Tacky Horse. This breed was recently signed into law by the South Carolina State Government as the State Heritage Horse.
The Director of the South Carolina Cotton Museum, Janson Cox, will be presenting a program on the importance of the Carolina Marsh Tacky to our colonial and revolutionary history. South Carolina militia under Gen. Francis Marion rode the marsh tacky horses through the swamps to evade the British.

The public is invited to meet Molly and hear about the heritage of this horse breed. There will also be an observance of Patriots Day. Women over the age of 18 with lineal descent of American patriots are eligible to join the DAR. March 20, 2010Marsh Tackies Return to Hobcaw Barony – Marsh Tacky History Day and Trail Ride

Marsh Tacky History Day at Hobcaw Barony is an all-day event celebrating the Marsh Tacky.  Activities will include a historic presentation about the breed, a trail ride, and a cookout.  A van tour will be available for registrants not riding horses.

Hobcaw Barony (www.hobcawbarony.org) is a 17,500-acre wildlife refuge that was the winter residence of Wall Street millionaire and presidential adviser Bernard Baruch. Mr. Bernard Baruch and his daughter, Belle, were fond admirers of Marsh Tackies and rode them almost exclusively while deer and quail hunting. 
Registration fee is $30.00 for riders (horse or van) and $10.00 for non-riders.  A hotdog lunch with a vegetarian alternative is included.

 February 26, 2010  == General Francis Marion Memorial Day, Marion, SC
There will be a wreath laying ceremony Feb. 26 at 9 a.m. at the Gen. Francis Marion statue on Marion Square in Marion, S.C., to honor the American Revolutionary War hero and the deeds of his brigade. The ceremony will recognize Gen. Francis Marion Memorial Day, which is Feb. 27.  The Blue Savannah-Swamp Fox Chapter of the SC Daughters of the American Revolution and the Col. Hugh Giles Regiment, Britton’s Neck Militia Re-enactors, along with Marion County third and eighth grade students will participate in the ceremony. David Grant, owner of Carolina Marsh Tacky Outdoors, will participate in this event on Friday, Feb. 26 with his Marsh Tackies.

A program about the history and preservation of Marsh Tackies was presented by DP Lowther and Ed Lowndes.  Jackie McFadden spoke about the State Heritage Horse bill.  Marsh Tacky horses, Rebel, Blueberry and Beauregard were viewed in the grassy area east of the building.

November 7, 2009 == Veteran’s Day Parade – Lancaster, SC

The Catawba Chapter of the DAR has asked that we attend the Lancaster Veteran’s Day Parade and ride our Marsh Tackies in recognition of our Revolutionary and Civil War veterans.  CMTA will have a pick-up truck and float in the parade.  Baker and Sandy Cochran will be there with their Marsh Tackies.

February 1, 2009 — First Annual Marsh Tacky Races – Hilton Head Island, SC, Mitchelsville Beach

The first annual Marsh Tacky Beach Races on Hilton Head Island, part of the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration, was a huge success!  We were expecting a couple hundred spectators and were astodnded by the arrival of 3,000 spectators who stood for hours on a cold, windy beach to witness the revival of the annual Marsh Tacky races!  Fun was had by all!
